"We believe books are beautiful and specialise in hand crafted mobile phone cases inspired by finely bound books"
Bookshell Bindery is located in Cornwall, on the South West tip of England and was founded by Zoe and David in 2014.
The adventure begins
During a year-long traveling adventure through North, Central and South America, Zoe and David were faced with the dilemma of how to travel inconspicuously with expensive iPhones, Kindles and laptops.
“We found ourselves in some pretty dodgy situations, and the only way we could use our iPhones safely was to disguise them behind a book.”
And so the original idea behind Bookshell was born – to use a book as a shell to protect and disguise digital devices.
Back to reality
On their return to the UK, Zoe and David set about turning their ideas into reality. David retrained as a bookbinder while Zoe developed the brand and became an Etsy ninja. After extensive prototyping they successfully combined their passion for traveling with the look and feel of old, leather-bound books. The first Bookshell case was born, and they’ve been hand crafting leather cases ever since.
Swapping the big city for coastal Cornwall is a huge part of the Bookshell story. Before deciding to get his hands dirty in the world of bookbinding, David ran a successful digital video production company in London. Zoe’s background is in graphic design, publishing and digital marketing. She spent many years working for the Guardian newspaper in London, before turning freelance.
Bookbinding the traditional way
“Yes, we could get machines to do all the hard work for us, but where’s the charm and skill in that? Books are such beautiful objects and deserve careful craftsmanship. There’s a time and a place for industrial processes, but our bindery is not one of them.”
The Bookshell team pride themselves on using the same tools and materials which master bookbinders have used over the last two centuries. They even have a press that dates back to Queen Victoria’s era. But despite the history, you won’t find them dwelling in the past; they’re passionate about fresh ideas. So when they’re not looking after customer orders, they spend their time developing new and innovative Bookshell products.
